Computer virus attacks are on the rise, with no end in sight. If anything, computer viruses are getting to be more damaging to your data and your Windows operating system. The writers of these evil acts either want your identity information, your money (via a moneypak) or to cripple your computer and therefore, your productivity. An example of the moneypak fraud is the FBI ICE virus. This virus locks up your desktop until you enter a moneypak number (costing you $200 or more) and can be classified as scareware or ransomware. Don’t be fooled by the Internet articles that claim it is easy to remove. Only trust your computer to a reputable and honest computer repair company.

Here is a list of things to avoid in order to protect your computer from viruses:

  1. Avoid unnecessary browser (Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, FireFox, and Safari) toolbar’s, add-ons and extensions.

If you see any of these names in your “Add Remove Programs” or “Programs and Features” list, or as a toolbar or add-in, immediately delete or remove (uninstall) them. They will either weaken the security of your Windows computer, by loading more and more dangerous garbage on your computer or at a minimum, will slow down your computer.

  1. Free Music Players. Instead of using consider using Microsoft’s media player, Media Center, Quicktime, Realplayer, Itunes or other reputable paid video players.
  2. Free Video players. Use Microsoft’s media player, Quicktime or other reputable paid video players.
  3. Free Games. These are notorious for containing malicious software.
  4. Free “Downloaders”. They claim that they will speed up the time it takes to download a file. Many of them speed up the time it takes your computer to become virus infected.
  5. Free software that claims to speed up your computer or clean your computer’s registry. These type of software can be very dangerous and can even disable your operating system.
  6. Free torrent software. Torrents tie other computer users together, through a network, no matter where they may reside. This type of software is used to download software files from others who use the same torrent software. What that means is that if someone has a game that you want (legal or illegal), you can download it from their computer, free. The only thing you don’t know is if the file was tainted with a dangerous virus, Trojan or rootkit.
