Steps to a Faster Wireless Speeds and Better Coverage

Do you want a wireless (WiFi) signal that is stronger and faster in your home or business? Here are a few things you can do to increase the signal strength of your wireless router or wireless modem device and you don’t need to know anything about networking or computers.

Ideas on where to place your wireless router

Computer PC Medic, Computer Repair in Fort Collins has seen wireless routers and wireless modems on the floor, behind bookcases, in cabinets and metal protective equipment vaults, under desks and in many more obscure locations. Wireless routers broadcast their signals in straight lines. This means that depending on the placement of the wireless device, the wireless signals may have to penetrate bookcases, floors, ceilings, walls, desks and more. The more barriers the signal has to go through the weaker the signal and slower the Internet experience.

So, what can you do to get a stronger and faster signal? Place the wireless device (modem or router) as close to the center of your home or business as possible. If you are using a wireless cable modem you might need to get a longer coax cable or a longer phone line for a DSL modem. Wireless routers can be moved to better locations by using a longer network cable. Place it as high in the room as possible. Keep it as far from walls and other solid objects as possible and NEVER place it in a cabinet, drawer or on the floor.

Devices that can interfere with your wireless

Nearby electronic equipment can cause interference. Make sure it is not next to a microwave oven or near a cordless phone. Do not stack it on top or under any other electronic device. Stacking it can limit its WiFi range and cause overheating issues. Overheating will reduce the life of the device and possibly cause intermittent restarting issues.

You should now be getting a stronger, more consistent wireless signal. Internet browsing and downloads will be a lot faster too!
